Standing Orders

It started with a conversation. I was in my critical care paramedic class and overheard someone talking about EMS Garage. It was Matt. We started talking about it...which led to more conversations. We had many of the same beliefs and ideas on where ems needs to be, what was working for us, and what wasn't. The other guy in the class, his name was JD. I didn't talk to him as much, but was clearly on the same page as us. We all spoke a few more times through the year via email and Facebook, and spoke of going to EMS Expo together, but he couldn't make it. I made it to Expo and I met the people who helped set me on course the most while in Dallas. The podcast idea was born, but it was in the back of my head.

A month later I am in conversation with Matt about the two of us starting a podcast along with JD. We needed a niche to set us apart from the others. And we found it. With a lot of thought and some help from the geekymedic, EMS Standing orders was born.

I began to send some emails to medical directors that have been on the garage and other podcasts, and a few that I had befriended in the past. The next thing I know, our podcast has some of the most well known medical directors from around the country willing to be a part of this show. It was amazing.

We now have three podcasts under our belt, and subject matter for a dozen more. We have a regular group of listeners and have some well established bloggers listening to the show and posting comments and reviews (thanks rogue medic). We have Dr Chris Russi as our “on staff” physician for the show, and he has been great to work with and guide us with content and discussion.

Now, here I am sitting next to in Dallas, waiting for the “gathering of Eagles” conference to start. We are going to meet and spend time with the top medical directors from around the country. We have an official logo, shirts and business card so people know who we are, and are soon to be on I tunes.

Six months ago, I would have never imagined any of this. Never imagined I would be helping provoke conversation amongst my peers around the country. And how humbled I would be at having a well known ems physician tell me what I am doing with this podcast is fantastic and it can make a difference.

And to think...it all started with a conversation between two paramedics. Ask yourself...What can you do with just a conversation.
